Augusta, Maine Visitors Guide
Maine’s capital city began in 1628 as a trading post, by settlers from Plymouth. Located just 39 miles from the ocean, it is at the head of the Kennebec River.
Things to Do in Augusta
Old Fort Western -- Get glimpse into the past when you tour the 1754 fort complex. The costumed staff will lead you through the “day in the life” of those who live and worked here during the 18th century. You will see the main house, reproduction block house, watch boxes and a palisade.
State House – Designed by Massachusetts state house architect Charles Bulfinch, Augusta’s State house has 185 foot dome with a statue of a robed lady bearing a torch. While here you can take a tour of the Hall of Flags.
Maine State Museum -- Learn about Maine’s natural environment history and heritage through the displays and exhibits here
Blaine House – The 1833 home of James G. Blaine; the 28 room house has been the official home of Maine’s Governors’ since 1919.
Children’s Discovery Museum – Especially, for children, these exhibits encourage hands on learning fun.
Pine Tree Arboretum – A great place to get in touch with nature. You can enjoy hiking, bird watching and picnicking.
Kennebec Rail Trail – Take a 2 mile walk along the impressive Kennebec River’s banks.
