Maine is the place to go for lovers of lighthouses. In fact with over 60 lighthouses along its coast, it’s no surprise that there is a lighthouse depot in Wells Maine. The lighthouse store is open year round and is “the source” for anything and everything affiliated with the states beacons in the darkness.
Below are some of the best lighthouses in Maine.
- Nubble Light – Officially listed as the Cape Neddick Light. The York shore lighthouse was built in 1879, and although there’s no public access, you can get a
fantastic view from Sohier Park in York Beach.
- Goat Island Light (Kennebunkport) – A picturesque 25 foot tower on Cape Porpoise Harbor.
- Portland Head Light – A 58 foot tower built in 1791 to keep ships safe from the rocky bluff below. If you are a fan of lighthouses, this is a must-see attraction.
- Spring Point Ledge Light – This Portland lighthouse was built in 1855, but only connected to land since 1951. It opens for tours throughout the summer.
- Marshal Point Light – The 1832 St. George Peninsula lighthouse has a maritime museum and a nearby wooden foot bridge.
- Fort Point Light – Standing watch at the headwaters to the Penobscot River, the 1836 Stockton Springs lighthouse is well worth the visit.
- Bass Harbor Head Light – Located near Acadia National Park, the 26 foot lighthouse was built in 1858 and can be reached by car or bike. Its impressive surroundings make it a photographers dream.
- Baker Island Light – Found on Cranberry Isles, the 1828 lighthouse is only reached by boat. During the summer months you can ride a tour boat that has a park ranger on board sharing area history and ecology.
- West Quoddy Head Light – Built in 1858, the 49 ft light house is one of Maine’s most recognized lights. You can visit the lighthouse at Quoddy State park.
- Petit Manan Light – Located offshore of Millbridge and reached only by boat, the 119 ft lighthouse has been guarding its shoreline since 1817.
- Owl’s Head Light – In Rockland Harbor is the 1825 Light that is now on the part of land know as Owl’s Head Light State Park. Inland lighthouses are also part of Maine’s landscape, these can be seen at Bath’s Sequin Island Light, the Cuckolds Lighthouse near Boothsbay, Monhegan Island Light and the Brown’s Head Light in Vinal Haven, Indian Island light in Rockport Harbor and Islesboro’s Grindle Point Light.
